Feb 17 2010 Meeting Agenda & Topics 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Our February meeting is this Wednesday and I have been having some difficulty with the BJoomUG website (long delays in pages loading...) so it's more difficult to plan an agenda.

I did start to review all the meeting thread posts since last year to see if there were any "carryover" items we've left on the table. It looks as if we've done a lot of the topics people raise, but I could only get so far and the page loads were timing out. Right now it seems to be working better, so maybe it's some of those pages I was trying to get to and not the site itself.

Also, our new site, BostonJoomla.org, seems to be on again/off again. This may be the result of some work you folks are doing on it, so I'm not complaining, just alerting.

February Meeting
Please note that we'll be in a different room. You can come to the regular place and we'll direct you to the correct room. (New to our new meeting location? Go to Cyber Cafe @ Malden Square for directions.)

We are doing tax preparation in the usual meeting room and you most likely won't fit in the Conference Room next to it. I plan to move us to the 3rd floor Conference Room and get an overhead projector. Wireless is not available up there, but a wired connection is available for one laptop. If anyone has a spare wireless router you want to bring to extend connectivity, that could help, but I do not have codes for the router running that LAN. I will pop in to the meeting here and there but mostly have to be downstairs for the tax program. Someone will need to take notes to post!

Meeting Outline
If we stick with our plan of about 20 minutes per topic (knowing it will stretch to 30 with questions, et.), the generic flow is posted below. Meanwhile, if you have a topic to suggest, please post it here! I'll be checking in throughout the week, up to Wed afternoon.

1.Feature Topic: nothing shaped up yet; perhaps a break from a feature topic so we can focus on the other areas?

2. Internal Issues: Split discussion into some website related and some other internal areas of interest (people may want to talk about our group structure and is it working, etc.).

3. Novice Joomla Developers: Q&A for novices (I am one and am starting to build up my website for the free VITA program I run, maldentaxes.org, so at the least, could ask one or two questions to the group. I'd like to set up a Forum like this on that site just for my volunteers.)

4. Advanced Joomla Developers: An open discuss for experienced developers to put their thoughts out there on what problems they’re struggling with and seeing if others in the group are able to provide advice.

5. Future Topics: Generate topics for future meetings.

Happy Valentines Day to everyone and have a good Presidents Day off on Monday.

Clair,

There were two separate issues this morning. The first was that at around the same time as you were posting, I was noticing the site hanging out. I checked and it was the server and had affected a couple of my sites. They must have been rebooting it to clear something up. At any rate, shortly thereafter I got an email from David Schrag who had noticed that the template was causing the site to be unusable in IE8. I was experimenting to figure out a short term solution before heading out to play for the service at the UU church here.

The short-term solution was to move all of the modules to the right side of the template to at least make the site work in IE8. I had tried several other things first but nothing was working so this seemed like the thing to try.

This evening I created a new template with Artisteer (the software I showed at a previous meeting). It keeps the basic organization of the front page with the modules on the right but also works in IE8.

I posted a thread about the template problems and the solution. I also suggested tjat tjos ,ogjt be something to add to the agenda.

Thanks to David for bringing the problem to my attention.
